THE FORUM
UniCredit Group, with the collaboration of “east” a magazine tackling international cultural, political and economic themes, is staging the fourth edition of the East Forum (formerly the Venice Forum), a permanent forum for European debate. Our objective is to bring together a large number of qualified representatives from the political-institutional, international academic and economic worlds,  to assess, analyze, discuss and debate the current international scenario. The topic proposed for the 2009 East Forum, which will be held on 25 June in Rome, is “New world governance for sustainable growth”.

CONTENTS
Almost two years from the emergence of the first signs preceding the deterioration of the world economic scenario, the scale and the depth of the current crisis are now becoming increasingly clearer. Although the crisis originated in the financial arena, it soon spread to the real economy, propagating globally with total disregard for geographical or political borders. When examining the causes that led to the present situation, there is wide agreement as to the limitations and inadequacy of the system of world governance established in the first half of the twentieth century. The institutional structure designed with the Bretton Woods agreements, and the international forums, which over the years have brought together the leading world powers, have proved insufficiently representative and not robust enough to adequately manage and coordinate an increasingly globalize and complex economic and financial system. The establishment of a new shared world governance structure is essential to be able to resume world economic growth.

THE ROUND TABLES
The Forum will be organized around three Round Tables, each of which followed by a debate, which will take the form of a talk show, involving a significant number of qualified speakers. The first session entitled “Governance in the 20th century: principles and inspiring values”, will look at the limitations, as well as the values that the current international system of Governance was built upon, putting it into the context of the historic era in which it originated and which saw it evolve. The second Round Table, entitled “Lessons from the crisis”, will concentrate on an analysis of the consequences of the current economic and financial crisis and on the link between the present situation and the limitations of governance at world level. The last panel “Tomorrow’s governance?”, will look towards the future, encouraging debate on what model of governance and economic growth to seek for the coming years.
